Sailor Moon Anime Soundtracks
Soundtracks were released for every series plus an "Extra Version Music Collection" containing previously unreleased music from the first four series. Music from the first collection was used in following seasons (except for Sailor Stars which had new music). Description: The Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon Memorial Music Box is a 10-disc compilation of background music from the series, movies, and specials, much of it never previously released. Many of the musical cues are arranged in a different order from the Music Collections. There are a few cues from the music collections that were not included on the Music Box. Also included are TV edits of the theme songs, sound effects (discs 8-10 bonus sections), and instrumental versions. The CD covers and picture discs were illustrated by Takeuchi Naoko. There are no back covers for the disc cases.
Status: Out of print. Watch out for bootlegs when shopping on Ebay. The bootleg boxes are not as high quality. Bootleg serial numbers are AnG-070~AnG-079 (produced by EverAnime) or SMB-044~SMB-053 (produced by SonMay). You can't always tell by price, but any set significantly cheaper than $190 may be bootleg.
How to find background music from an episode
Check the cue sheets from the Memorial Music Box booklet: Download Scans. This book lists every piece of background music used in each episode and movie. The book is printed in Japanese, but this cheat sheet of a sample page will help you use the scans without understanding Japanese.
The only Japanese you really need to understand are the characters for "RAIBURARII" which stand for "Library" (see the cheat sheet and this katakana/hiragana chart). "Library" next to a cue means it was a piece taken from the studio's "library" of music and not composed originally for Sailor Moon. These "studio library" pieces were written somewhere else and Toei did not have the rights to distribute the music on the Sailor Moon soundtracks. Frequently these are classical music pieces. See the Studio Library page for episode rips and some of the original classical compositions.
Pages 108-117 of the booklet are the Cue Lists for the music used in each season, categorized by theme (I've translated these categories where I can). Pages 118-123 list the BGM cues used in the movies. Pages 124-195 are Cue Sheets for all 200 episodes: the third column in each episode sheet contains the cue identifier (a letter-number combination), which you use to refer back to the seasonal cue lists (p. 108-117) for the specific disc that music is on. The cue id follows the format: CD name-tracknumber-partoftrack. (EX = Sailor Moon Music Collection Extra Version, R = Sailor Moon R Music Collection, etc.) Example 1: 2-2-2 means Music Box disc 2, track 2, part 2. Example 2: ST2-5-2 means Sailor Stars Vol. 2, track 5, part 2.
