Anime Soundtracks

Soundtracks for Sailor Moon were released for every year of the anime, along with an "Extra Version" released for the first four seasons. The first season soundtrack (Sailormoon Music Collection) contained music that would be utilized throughout the entire run of the show. Following the conclusion of the show, a special box set of incidental music (or background music - BGM) was released. You might think this is just a re-release of the the previous music collections, but it's not. Many of the musical cues are rearranged and there is much music that was never included in the previous soundtracks. There are a few tracks from the seasonal music collections not found on the Music Box (I couldn't tell you which). There are also a few music cues (BGM) not included on any CD, known as Studio Library pieces. The Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon Memorial Music Box is a 10-disc compilation of the background music used in all 200 episodes of the TV show, the 3 movies, and the specials. It also contains TV-length edits of the theme songs, sound effects, and instrumental versions.

If you are looking for a specific piece of BGM you heard in an episode, there are a few ways: check first if it's on the Sailormoon Music Collection as that contains some of the most commonly used cues. However if you're looking for a Sailor Stars episode, go straight to those music collections as that season featured an almost brand-new soundtrack. Next check the music collection for that particular season. If you can't find it there, start on the Music Box. It also is divided into season, but it comes with a handy booklet with cue sheets for the cues (pieces of BGM) used in each episode and movie. This booklet is printed in Japanese, but you should be able to muddle through without being able to read it. Here's a cheat sheet.

You will need a katakana/hiragana chart if you wish to read the characters, but the only thing you really need to read are the characters for "Studio Library" (on the cheat sheet) which is a sign that it's a piece the company did not have the rights to release on CD.

Pages 108-117 of the booklet are the Cue Lists for the music used in each season, categorized by theme (I've translated these categories where I can). Pages 118-123 list the BGM cues used in the movies. Pages 124-195 are Cue Sheets for all 200 episodes: the third column in each episode sheet contains the cue identifier (a letter-number combination), which you use to refer back to the seasonal cue lists (p. 108-117) for the specific disc that music is on. The cue id follows the format: CD name-tracknumber-partoftrack. EX=Sailor Moon Music Collection Extra Version, R=Sailor Moon R Music Collection, etc. Example: 1-1-1 is Music Box disc 1, track 1, part 1 and ST2-5-2 is Sailor Stars Vol. 2, track 5, part 2.
